How to set up routers for DSL service

The following instructions can be used to guide you through the process of setting up your ASUS, D-Link, Linksys, Netgear or TP-Link router for use with DSL service.

Please note: These are basic setup instructions for use with common models. Your router's setup options may differ based on its model or firmware version. If the instructions found here don't match your device's options, please visit your router manufacturer's website for model or firmware specific instructions.

Asus Routers

Connection Setup:

  1. Navigate to the router's web interface. (http://192.168.1.1)
  2. Click on WAN under Advanced Settings on the left side of the page.
  3. Set the WAN Connection Type to PPPoE.
  4. Enter your User Name and Password for the DSL connection.
  5. Click on Apply at the bottom of the page.

Wireless Setup:

  1. Navigate to the router's web interface. (http://192.168.1.1)
  2. Click on Wireless on the left side of the page under Advanced Settings.
  3. Enter the name that you'd like to give your 2.4GHz wireless network in the SSID field.
  4. Change the Authentication Method to WPA2-Personal.
  5. Enter your desired wireless password into the WPA Pre-Shared Key field.
  6. Click on the Save button at the bottom of the page.
  7. Change the Frequency to 5GHz.
  8. Enter the name that you'd like to give your 5GHz wireless network in the SSID field.
  9. Change the Authentication Method to WPA2-Personal.
  10. Enter your desired wireless password into the WPA Pre-Shared Key field.
  11. Click on Save at the bottom of the page.

D-Link Routers

Connection and Wireless Setup:

  1. Navigate to the router's web interface. (http://192.168.0.1)
  2. Click on the Setup link at the top of the page.
  3. Click on Internet on the left side of the page.
  4. Click on Internet Connection Setup Wizard.
  5. Set Internet Connection to PPPoE.
  6. Enter your PPPoE Username into the User Name field.
  7. Enter your PPPoE Password in the Password field.
  8. Set the Networks Name (SSID) to whatever your want your network to be named.
  9. Set the Security Mode to Auto-WPA/WPA2.
  10. Enter your desired Wireless password in the Network Key field.
  11. Click on Next then follow the steps detailed in the remainder of the Setup Wizard.

Linksys Routers

Connection Setup:

  1. Navigate to the router's web interface. (http://192.168.1.1)
  2. Click on the Connectivity link on the left side of the page.
  3. Click on the Internet Settings tab.
  4. Click on edit next to the Type of Internet Connection.
  5. Select PPPoE for the Connection Type.
  6. Enter your DSL Username and DSL Password in their respective fields.
  7. Set the Connection Mode to Keep Alive.
  8. Click on Apply.
  9. Click on Ok.

Wireless Setup:

  1. Navigate to the router's web interface. (http://192.168.1.1)
  2. Click on the Wireless link on the left side of the page.
  3. Click on edit next to the 2.4 GHz network.
  4. Enter the name that you'd like to give your 2.4GHz wireless network in the Network name (SSID) field.
  5. Enter your desired Wireless password in the Password field.
  6. Set the Security mode to WPA2 Personal.
  7. Set Broadcast SSID to Enabled. If this is set to disabled, your wireless network will not show up when you search for wireless networks.
  8. Click on Apply.
  9. Click on Ok.
  10. Click on edit next to the 5 GHz network and repeat steps 4 through 9 to alter your 5GHz wireless settings.

Netgear Routers

Connection Setup:

  1. Navigate to the router's web interface. (http://192.168.1.1)
  2. Click on Basic Settings under Setup on the left side of the page.
  3. Set Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login to Yes.
  4. Set Internet Service Provider to PPPoE.
  5. Enter your PPPoE Username and Password into their respective fields.
  6. Set Internet IP Address to Get Dynamically from ISP.
  7. Set Domain Name Server (DNS) Address to Get Dynamically from ISP.
  8. Click on Apply at the bottom of the page.

Wireless Setup:

  1. Navigate to the modem's web interface. (http://192.168.1.1)
  2. Click on Wireless Settings under Setup on the left side of the page.
  3. Enter the name that you'd like to give your wireless network in the Name (SSID) field.
  4. Set the Region to Canada.
  5. Set the Security Options to WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES].
  6. Enter your desired wireless password in the Passphrase field.
  7. Click on Apply at the bottom of the page.

TP-Link Routers

Connection Setup:

  1. Navigate to the router's web interface. (http://192.168.0.1)
  2. Click on Internet under Basic.
  3. Set the Internet Connection Type to PPPoE.
  4. Enter your PPPoE Username and Password into their respective fields.
  5. Click on Save.

Wireless Setup:

  1. Navigate to the modem's web interface. (http://192.168.0.1)
  2. Click on Wireless.
  3. Enable both the 2.4GHz and 5Ghz wireless radios. 
  4. Enter the names that you'd like to give your 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless networks in the Network Name (SSID) field.  We recommend that you name the networks differently.
  5. Enter the wireless passwords that you'd like to give your 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless networks in the Password field.
  6. Click on Save.
